Voices from Mawuli SHS
Mawuli Senior High School in Ho was founded in 1950 and was the first state-supported secondary school in the Volta Region. Boys and girls have been studying together there since 1956. The school’s motto, ‘Head – Heart – Hand’, stands for academic learning, personal values and practical skills. With more than 5,000 pupils, the school is now one of the largest in the region. Further information can be found on the school’s website: https://mawulischool.edu.gh.
As part of the project, the pupils were invited to express their perspectives on slavery and its consequences in short texts or creative pieces. Together with their teacher, Rosemary Okae Aduamah, they produced impressive works that demonstrate a deep understanding of the history of slavery and a strong awareness of its lasting effects right up to the present day.
We have provided links to the resulting poems and the song here.
As has been the case at other schools, it became clear here too just how deeply young people engage with issues of historical violence, social inequality and justice. To protect the pupils’ privacy, no personal contact details have been published. Anyone interested in further discussion or information can contact Rev.
