Voices from Mawuko Girls SHS
The E.P.C. Mawuko Girls’ Senior High School in Ho was founded in 1983 by the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana and is now one of the region’s leading girls’ schools. Its guiding principle is: ‘Educate a woman for God and educate a whole nation for God.’
As part of the project, the 3rd year General Arts Class reading History explored historical forms of enslavement in the region, the transatlantic slave trade, German involvement, the culture of remembrance and questions of justice. Working in groups with their teacher, Stephen Agyei, the pupils developed their own texts, poems and songs in which they expressed their thoughts and feelings about the past and the present.
Take a closer look at the resulting images, poems, texts and song here. Prosper and Christian supported the media work.
The pieces were created in a short space of time and recorded by hand. They impressively demonstrate how young people connect historical themes with their own experiences and creatively bring their perspectives to life.
To protect the pupils’ privacy, no personal contact details have been published. Anyone interested in further discussion or information can contact Rev. Courage Paemka: courage.paemka@gmail.com, +233553681080.
