A joint project between the Bremen Mission and the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana (EPCG) at secondary schools in Ho and Keta, as well as at the E.P. College of Education in Ho and the Peki College of Education.

The ‘Aftermath of Enslavement’ project examines historical forms of enslavement in present-day Ghana and Germany’s involvement in this history. It was carried out in March and April 2026 by Katharina Hoffmann (Germany) and Rev. Courage Paemka (Ghana) in collaboration with teaching staff at schools and colleges.

The project focuses on the perspectives of young people in Ghana on this violent past and its effects, which are still felt today. At the same time, the project aims to raise awareness of this shared history in Ghana and Germany and to promote exchange between young people from both countries.

Sharing memories and coming to terms with the long-term consequences of slavery contribute to the United Nations General Assembly resolution of 25 March 2026, which recognises the enslavement of Africans as the ‘most serious crime against humanity’. At the same time, the aim is to gain an insight into the everyday lives of young people in Ghana and Germany. Openness, curiosity and personal exchange – whether through conversation, music or other creative forms of expression – foster understanding, respect and mutual recognition across national borders. The dialogue should therefore not focus solely on the traumatic past, but also create space for encounters that highlight the similarities and differences in the lives of young people.

• What traces has it left in social structures, economic conditions, world views and religious beliefs?
• How can pathways to historical justice and reparations for people of African descent be established?
• What steps are necessary to promote a just and dignified life for all people worldwide?
