Echo der Versklavung

Aftermath of Enslavement - Voices from Ghana and Germany

German - Ghanian teaching project of Norddeutsche Mission Bremen, Germany, and Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana (EPCG) at senior high schools in Ho and Keta, and E.P.C education college in Ho and Peki College of Education, Ghana

Aftermath of Enslavement looks back to historical forms of enslavement in present-day Ghana and German entanglements in this history. The project was implemented by Katharina Hoffmann (Germany) and Rev. Courage Paemka (Ghana) in collaboration with teachers from high school and colleges in March and April 2026.

We have asked students in Ghana to share their perspectives on the violent past and we want to raise awareness of lasting effects in both countries. All involved hope that an exchange between Ghanian and German students will take place. Keeping the memories alive and reflecting on the lasting impact actively contributes to the UN General Assembly resolution on justice for the enslavement of African people as “gravest crime against humanity” adopted on 25 March 2026. Furthermore, it is also about learning about the everyday lives of young people in both countries. Being curious, talking to each other, singing and further forms of communication are important for fostering respect, recognition, and acceptance across borders. In other words, the exchange should not only concentrate on the negative aspects of the past and its legacies but also include positive moments for understanding the similarities and differences that life brings for young people in Ghana and Germany.

Guiding questions

How has enslavement contributed to injustices today? How has this history influenced mindsets, perspectives of each other, spiritual concepts and belief systems as well as economic and social structures? How can we initiate changes for reparatory justice for African people and implement steps for a decent life for all people on a global scale?
