As part of ‘Operation Stop’, the Ghanaian government wants to use the army to stop illegal mining activities that are causing massive environmental damage such as water pollution and jeopardising drinking water supplies.
To this end, the government wants to work together with the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners. It has once again pointed out that river and forest conservation areas have been designated as red zones in which all activities are prohibited and people working there will be arrested. Ghana's Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar reiterated the government's commitment to the fight against illegal mining and called on all stakeholders to support the efforts.
