Bremen as a National Site of Remembrance and Learning on Colonialism?

Follow-up meeting on 25 November 2026 at Afrika-Netzwerk Bremen

Civil society wants a say in the planning of a national site of remembrance and learning on German colonialism. The follow-up meeting on 25 November aims to agree on a joint position, present the current draft of the position paper and decide on the next steps.

Whether this site should be established in Bremen is currently a topic of discussion among politicians and civil society in Bremen and Berlin. Afrika-Netzwerk Bremen and bremen.global have therefore already brought together committed people from the city and the region twice. Their shared concern: the site of remembrance and learning must not be planned without those who have been working on colonial injustice for years, often as volunteers and in the face of resistance, and who advocate for the voices of those affected to be included.

These meetings have produced a position paper, which an editorial group is currently preparing for co-signing. The meeting will also provide an overview of what has happened since October.

When: Wednesday, 25 November 2026, 6:00 p.m.
Where: Afrika-Netzwerk Bremen, Bürgermeister-Smidt-Straße 47, Bremen, Germany (entrance in the passageway, next to the “Quo vadis” shop)
For whom: Representatives of civil society organisations as well as individuals
