Cassava – a staple food with a future

Worship service and cassava workshop by the North German Mission on the First Sunday of Advent at St. Magni parish in Bremen-Nord

We warmly invite you to celebrate the First Sunday of Advent with us. The morning begins at 10 a.m. with a worship service in St. Magni Church, followed by an interactive workshop all about cassava.

For more than 500 million people in sub-Saharan Africa, this root tuber is an essential staple food, including in Ghana and Togo. Together we will explore its history, its importance for nutrition and the many ways it can be prepared. We will also look at sustainability and climate justice: What does climate change mean for people who have done very little to cause it? And how can a hardy plant like cassava help secure their food supply and income in the long term?

The highlight: a little tasting! Find out for yourself how delicious cassava is, whether classically boiled or as crispy fries.

Come along and bring your appetite and curiosity. We look forward to seeing you!

When: Sunday, 29 November 2026 (First Sunday of Advent); 10:00 a.m. worship service, followed by the cassava workshop
Where: Evangelical Lutheran Parish of St. Magni, Unter den Linden 24, 28759 Bremen, Germany
