Working with the elderly in Togo
In recent decades, traditional family support for elderly people in Africa has weakened, as many younger people move to cities and older relatives are often left alone. In response, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Togo (EEPT) runs a program to support seniors.
Led by Pastor Milka Agbozo, the initiative has two main parts: home visits that provide food, medication, and pastoral care to elderly people living alone, and “Bien Vieillir” (“Growing Old Well”), a weekly club for mobile seniors. These gatherings in Lomé and other districts offer exercise, memory training, Bible study, music, games, and social exchange.
Supported by volunteers and involving children and young musicians, the program strengthens intergenerational ties and reduces loneliness, helping older people maintain health, dignity, and joy in everyday life.
