Hatorgodo Clinic in Ghana

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana operates several clinics that provide essential medical care in remote rural areas. One of them is the clinic in Hatorgodo, a small facility east of Accra that offers 24-hour services and is often the only accessible healthcare option.

The clinic treats common conditions such as malaria, parasitic infections, stomach and lung diseases, and anemia. It also provides maternity care and pre- and postnatal services, carried out by a young team of nurses, midwives, pharmacy assistants, and community health workers.

Support from the Weltladen (One World Shop) in Bad Salzuflen has enabled improvements such as staff training and better water supply. However, the clinic faces a major challenge: it is officially classified only as a basic clinic but needs recognition as a policlinic to handle serious cases. This limitation recently contributed to the death of a pregnant woman who could not reach the nearest policlinic in time.

To upgrade its status, the facility must expand delivery rooms and acquire an ultrasound machine and a computer for digital patient records, a system already in use in two other church health centers.
