The first results of the German-Ghanaian project on the legacy of the enslavement of African people, which was launched in March 2026, are already available on the Bremen Mission website. Texts, songs and poems by Ghanaian school pupils and university students will soon be featured more prominently (https://www.norddeutschemission.de/informieren/echo-der-versklavung). In addition, concrete plans are being developed to continue the project.

A concept is currently being prepared for a joint seminar organised by the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg and Peki College of Education in Ghana. The working title of the seminar is Church, Mission and Enslavement in Ghana: History and Repercussions. One of the topics will be the “purchase of freedom” of enslaved children by the Bremen Mission.

The seminar is scheduled to take place from April to July 2027. In principle, it will also be open to people who are not enrolled as students. Seminar sessions will be held in person at the respective locations, alongside joint online sessions. The language of communication will be English. Following introductory presentations and readings on the entanglements of church, mission and enslavement, participants will carry out small-scale interview projects in their respective locations. Alongside the exchange of different perspectives, the seminar aims to explore how this subject should be addressed in churches today and in what ways historical justice can and should be pursued. Further information about the seminar will be published once the planning has been completed and funding has been secured.

Exchange between Young People in Ghana and Germany 

Groups of upper secondary school pupils and young people who are interested in an exchange with their peers on this topic are still being sought. Pupils from the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Mawuko Girls’ Senior High School in Ho warmly invite interested groups to take part. She would be pleased to present the project and its findings to date in the Bremen and Oldenburg region. As part of these presentations, there will also be an opportunity to hold an online conversation directly with young people in Ghana.
