The National Assembly of Togo has extended the state of emergency in the northern Savanes region by 12 months from 13th March 2026.
The measure has been in force since June 2022.
The extension was deemed necessary as the terrorist threats along the country's northern borders have not diminished. The state of emergency enables the armed forces and security services to operate with far-reaching powers.
The responsible security chief, Colonel Hodabalo Awaté, stated that the additional powers granted by the measure would be exercised in strict accordance with the rule of law.
