The exhibition “Solidarity in (Post-)Colonial Spaces? Stories of Remembering and Acting: Anti-Colonial Movements in Bremen” will open on March 11, 2026, at 5:00 PM at the House of Science.

It presents stories of Bremen residents acting in solidarity with the world and within their city since the late 1960s. Civil society alliances engaged in global justice, supported anti-colonial liberation movements, and fought against apartheid. At the same time, they fought locally against racism, promoted critical remembrance of colonialism, and addressed colonial traces in the urban landscape.

Visitors are invited to learn about historical and current social movements and to reflect on their ideas and practical approaches to solidarity. How did different concepts of anti-colonial solidarity differ? What role do memory and critical examination of German colonialism play? Since when have debates existed about the return of cultural heritage, the renaming of streets, or the lack of colonial content in school textbooks?

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Bremen Africa Archive, the exhibition focuses on its well-documented cooperation with the Namibian liberation movement SWAPO, as well as the commitment of anti-colonial solidarity groups, for example in addressing German colonial crimes. Selected stories illustrate how closely memory, responsibility, and solidarity are linked—and how contested these issues remain today. Activists and experts also share their perspectives on past engagement and point out gaps in earlier efforts.

A supporting program will run from March to June.

The project is based on research conducted by the Institute for Modern and Contemporary History on the Bremen Africa Archive, as well as an exhibition curated by students of Cultural Studies in the summer semester of 2025. It is funded by the Senator for Culture and Brot für die Welt. Cooperation partners include the North German Mission and the University of Bremen.
