Severe flooding in Central and West Africa

Togo also affected

While the north of Ghana is currently being plagued by a severe drought, other regions, including Ghana's neighbour Togo, are being hit by floods.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 700,000 people have already been affected.

This alarming situation is the result of torrential rainfall in the region just two months after the start of the rainy season. The Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, Mali and Togo are particularly affected.

In cooperation with its partners, the United Nations has intensified its support for the governments of the affected countries. This primarily involves the distribution of food, the construction of shelters and the provision of water and sanitation. This year, the United Nations Central Emergency Relief Fund has provided 10 million US dollars to the governments of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Niger. This aid is intended to mitigate the effects of climate change, including flooding, which continues to threaten millions of lives in sub-Saharan Africa.
