In Togo, the first Senate elections were held after the constitutional amendment. Opposition parties have vehemently protested, fearing that President Gnassingbé's power will be permanently entrenched.

In the newly amended constitution, the direct election of the head of state has been abolished, and his role is now limited to representative duties. The president's previous powers have been transferred to the prime minister, a position now held by Faure Gnassingbé. Under the old constitution, Gnassingbé's term would have been limited, but this change has circumvented that limitation. He has ruled since 2005, when he took over the government after the death of his father. His father had come to power through a military coup and ruled the country with an iron fist for 38 years. The new Senate consists of 61 members, 41 of whom are elected by regional and municipal councils, with the remaining members appointed by the prime minister.

Opposition parties and civil society organizations had already labeled the constitutional amendment as illegal, as it was not carried out according to the procedures set out in the constitution. However, the opposition is divided, and there is no unified strategy—some, such as the National Alliance for Change (ANC) and the Democratic Forces for the Republic (FDR), boycotted the elections, viewing the constitutional changes and the resulting elections as a "constitutional coup," while others, such as the Alliance of Democrats for Integral Development (ADDI), participated.

As a result, the position of Faure Gnassingbé and his party, Union for the Republic (UNIR), remains stable.
