On August 15 at 8:30 p.m., NM will screen a film from Ghana that has won various international film awards and has the power to change perceptions of African cinema. All interested parties are cordially invited.

“The Fisherman” (2024, 100 min.) is the title of Zoey Martinson’s film, presented in the original language with German subtitles. (It explores the tension between tradition and modernity in Ghana’s fishing industry.)

“The Fisherman” tells the story of Atta Oko (Ricky Adelayitar), a proud traditional fisherman who has spent his entire life working in the waters off the coast of Ghana. When he is suddenly forced to retire, his world changes in the most unexpected ways—and with the arrival of a rather unusual companion—a talking fish—the story evolves into a blend of fantasy and comedy. Accompanied by his unusual fish companion and three loyal “colleagues,” Atta Oko sets out on a journey to Accra to apply for a loan from a bank to buy their own fishing boat. What follows is a whimsical journey full of humor, magic, and a colorful glimpse into life in Ghana.
