Resubmission of Anti-LGBTQ Bil

Disappointment Among Ghana’s LGBTQ+ Community

Many had assumed that the proposed strict anti-LGBTQ+ law would be shelved indefinitely. New President John Mahama had suggested that government regulations should take precedence over the bill.
However, ten MPs have now reintroduced the previously abandoned draft into Parliament. Ghanaian LGBTQ activist Elikem Fiatsi described the revival of the bill as “discouraging and difficult to process” but reaffirmed that efforts against it would continue.
Ghana’s Ministry of Finance has once again warned against passing the bill, stating that its implementation could jeopardize billions in international financial aid. Supporters argue that the law reflects Ghana’s cultural and religious values and that foreign institutions should not interfere in the country’s internal affairs.
