Replacement Documents for Missing Birth Certificates

Strengthening the Legal Status of Togolese Women

For many women, especially in rural areas, the lack of birth certificates is a major problem.

Without them, they also lack personal identification documents, severely restricting their access to essential healthcare and education services. Their participation in economic and social initiatives is also at risk.

In response, the Togolese government has launched a program to provide affected individuals with replacement documents, granting them new opportunities. However, it remains unclear why only a total of 1,000 of these documents are initially being issued, supporting just 200 women per region. Abiré Kpemssi, Director of Gender and Women's Rights, emphasized that this program reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring women’s access to identification documents. However, no explanation was given as to why the initiative does not extend to all those in need.
