Ghana supports the territorial integrity of UN member states and calls for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine.

Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated during his visit to Ukraine, in a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sybiha, that Ghana strictly adheres to the UN Charter. He emphasised that his country stands by the territorial integrity of member states and called for an immediate ceasefire.

"Ghana reaffirms its firm commitment to the UN Charter, to the territorial integrity of UN member states, and to the necessity of compliance with international law. As a relatively small country, we do not believe in the right of the stronger and in the notion that countries should be targets and that territorial integrity can be violated in breach of the UN Charter and international law," said the Ghanaian Foreign Minister.

Also on the agenda during the visit to Kyiv was the matter of two Ghanaian prisoners of war in Ukraine. Many Africans — amongst them citizens from Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa — are fighting in the Russian army, having been lured to Russia under false pretences and forcibly conscripted. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister estimates approximately 1,700 Africans from 36 countries.

At least 55 Ghanaians have been killed in the fighting in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Ablakwa called on the Ukrainian authorities to release the two Ghanaian prisoners of war immediately and expressed his gratitude for the fair treatment of the men.

The visit by Foreign Minister Ablakwa is the first of its kind since the establishment of bilateral relations between Ghana and Ukraine.
