With Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, a woman has been elected to Ghana’s second-highest office for the first time.
Opoku-Agyemang hails from Cape Coast and earned both a Bachelor's and a Master’s degree in Education at the University of Cape Coast. She later obtained a PhD in English Literature from York University in Canada.
Her academic career began at the University of Cape Coast, where she held several key positions, including Head of the English Department. She also served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research. In 2008, she became the first woman to serve as Vice-Chancellor of a public university in Ghana, focusing on improving infrastructure and increasing opportunities for women in academia.
In 2013, Opoku-Agyemang transitioned into politics and was appointed Minister of Education during John Mahama’s first presidency.
