The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare has assured in a press conference that the police will ensure security during the elections in early December. He emphasised that the media is a key player in this year's elections and must discharge its responsibility as the fourth estate effectively and responsibly.

Akuffo Dampare also emphasised Ghana's reputation as a pioneer in democratic practices and attributed this success to effective collaboration between institutions such as the police and the media. He further called for concerted efforts to make the forthcoming elections a "milestone in Ghana's democratic history".

Meanwhile, ex-president and opposition NDC candidate, John Mahama, has accused the current government of ruining the country economically and emphasised that as president, he wants to implement a comprehensive reform of the VAT system, among other things. He named a number of plans to revitalise the economy, including the abolition of some high taxes introduced by the NPP government, including an emissions levy and import duties on vehicles and equipment imported for industrial and agricultural purposes. However, he did not comment on the financing of these measures. His rival, incumbent Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP, has announced that one of his main objectives is to intensively combat rampant corruption.

The elections will take place at the beginning of December and, as in the last elections four years ago, will probably be a neck-and-neck race between the two presidential candidates as well as the two largest parties, the still ruling NPP and the opposition NDC. Four years ago, there was a stalemate in parliament; apart from the NPP and NDC, only one independent candidate was able to win a seat, all other parties came away empty-handed.
