On Sunday, October 5, 2025, the documentary “Togoland Projections” will be shown at 3:30 PM in Bremen’s Neustadt district.
The 2023 film is a documentary that addresses the difficult legacy of colonialism in Togo. Director Jürgen Ellinghaus explores how people are confronted with their colonial past and what impact historical film footage has on the present. The film depicts the expedition of African researcher Hans Schomburgk before the First World War, during which he shot adventure and documentary films in what was then the German colony of Togo. The documentary combines historical footage with the reactions of today’s Togolese viewers and encourages reflection on the colonial past.
