The parliament of the West African Economic Community ECOWAS, which includes 12 West African states following the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, has elected Memounatou Ibrahima from Togo as its first female speaker.

Similar to the EU, the presidency rotates among the member states.

However, no representatives from Togo were present at the inauguration as no new members of the ECOWAS parliament have yet been appointed due to the parliamentary elections in the country.

Memounatou Ibrahima succeeded Senator Barau Jibrin from Nigeria, who was elected first deputy speaker.
