More seats in parliament

Elections in Togo

In Togo elections for the national and regional parliaments are due to be held on the 13th April 2024. The last elections in 2018 were boycotted by the opposition parties as they complained about ‚irregularities‘ in the vote then.

This time however, the opposition parties want to take part in the elections. They called people to register, to challenge to ruling party. Campaigning is permitted until 11 April. The number of seats in the national parliament has been increased from 91 up to 113 by law in January.

In 2005, the current president Faure Gnassingbe came to power after the death of his father, who had previously ruled the country for 38 years. Since then, Faure Gnassingbe has been re-elected three times. Each time the opposition doubted the regularity.
