Ishmael Dotse, a Ghanaian South-North volunteer at Bremen Mission office, took part in a training course to obtain his Juleica. Juleica means youth leader card and qualifies for voluntary work in youth work. Here is Ishmael's report.
'I joined the Juleica because I wanted to find out how team leaders are trained and equipped with the necessary skills to lead young people and children. Among the songs we sang during the training, there was one in particular that impressed me the most. I was told it was a song young people sing during their confirmation classes ...
Never forget that you're alive was someone else's idea.
And that you breathe, His gift to you
You are wanted, not a child of chance, not a whim of nature
Whether you sing your song of life in a minor or major key
You are a thought of God, a brilliant one at that
You are you, that's the highlight, yes, the highlight. Yes, you are you!
Especially at this time when I am living in a foreign country, struggling with cultural differences and integration and at the same time being aware of who I am and where I come from. This song really spoke volumes and encouraged me to accept who I am.
We were confronted with conflict and some conflict resolution mechanisms. Diversity was also covered. We discussed leadership, different types of leaders and the type of leadership that would be effective for a group of young people. I met new people and enjoyed the company.
