On the occasion of the current UN General Assembly, the Dynamique Monseigneur Kpodzro (DMK) has appealed to the United Nations Security Council and called for immediate intervention in an open letter to the President of the UN Security Council, Boštjan Malovrh, due to the worsening political crisis in Togo.

In the letter, the DMK deplores human rights violations and criticises the UN for its lack of response. It recalls the assassination of the country's first president, Sylvanus Olympio, and accuses France of continuing to interfere in Togo's internal affairs. Above all, the DMK points to the constitutional amendment in May of this year, which allows the term of office of the ruler Faure Gnassingbe to be extended. The son of the long-term dictator Eyadema would have had to relinquish his office under the previous constitution.

In the letter, the DMK further emphasises the ethical, legal and political challenges arising from this situation and calls for the UN to intervene. For years, the Togolese people have been deprived of their democratic rights - through rigged elections, economic mismanagement and political crimes. The UN's inaction has thus contributed to Togo's loss of sovereignty and the death of important opposition figures.

The DMK calls for the enforcement of UN resolutions to protect human rights and appeals to the UN to fulfil its mandate to promote equality and human dignity.

The DMK is a non-governmental organisation founded by the Catholic Archbishop Kpodzro to support the democratisation process in Togo and to publicise human rights violations in Togo.
