Green Taxation

Experts in Lomé Working on Climate-Sensitive Tax Policy

A meeting with representatives from eight African countries took place in the Togolese capital, Lomé.

The conference brought together experts and senior officials from the ministries of finance of Togo, Gambia, Rwanda, Djibouti, Uganda, Mauritania, Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic.

The aim was to exchange best practices and identify concrete ways to mobilise domestic resources in support of ecological transformation.
Key topics of discussion included the integration of climate criteria into tax systems, the adjustment of tax incentives to promote green investment, and stronger coordination between tax, budgetary and climate policies. The initiative, supported by the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) and the African Development Bank (AfDB), forms part of the CADAST project (Capacity Development for Africa's Structural Transformation), which aims to strengthen African governments’ capacity to implement green macroeconomic policies.

Togo has launched an ambitious fiscal and economic reform process. The meeting provided an opportunity to further advance efforts to integrate climate considerations into tax policy.
