Greater Use of Solar Energy

Nangbéto Hydroelectric Plant in Togo to Be Expanded

Communauté Électrique du Bénin (CEB), the binational energy supply company jointly operated by Benin and Togo, plans to expand the Nangbéto hydroelectric plant with a solar facility.

The project involves increasing renewable energy generation for the CEB by supplementing the Nangbéto hydroelectric plant with a photovoltaic system of at least 40 MWp. An energy storage solution is also to be integrated. The project is being funded by the KfW development bank and is intended to help improve grid stability and regional energy security in Togo and Benin.

The 65.6 MW Nangbéto hydroelectric plant on the Mono River in the Plateaux Region of southern Togo was commissioned in 1988. The 52-metre-high, 443-metre-long dam was built between 1984 and 1987 to provide both Togo and Benin with electrical power as well as water for irrigation and flood protection.
