The Moderator oft he Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPC), Rt. Rev. Dr. Agbeko, has made an appeal to President Nana Akufo-Addo to intervene to halt the imminent closure oft he Evangelical Presbyterian University College due to its indebtedness to a bank and Ghana Revenue Authorities.

Moderator Agbeko said the school was currently unable to service ist loans contracted from the National Investment Bank (NIB), honour its accumulated tax obligations to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and, on top, meet set standards by Tertiary Education Commision.

This means that the college is facing closure. Although the EPC has now taken over the repayment and interest payment of the loan, the situation represents a major burden for the church and jeopardises the securing of other tasks.

The Chairman of the University Council, Dr Afeti, pointed out that the financial problems had arisen partly because a high-quality education had been established at affordable fees.

Dr Agbeko did not ask President Nana Akufo-Addo for direct aid payments, but was pleading for extensions and waivers to have the space to be able to mobilise new sources of funding.

President Nana Akufo-Addo recognised the EPC's contribution to the country and its people. According to Akufo-Addo, the government would endeavour to help the church and coordinate with the tax authorities on how to proceed. However, he did not make any concrete commitments.
