Following the announcement to enhance energy supply through micro-nuclear power plants imported from the USA, Togo has established an Atomic Energy Commission (CEAT). (In our last newsletter, we reported on these new power plants.)
The CEAT is tasked with overseeing the safe and effective use of nuclear energy. Additionally, it will collaborate with other relevant authorities to address technical gaps in the management of nuclear resources. Another key objective is to maximize the impact of nuclear energy in critical sectors such as energy, health, and agriculture, thereby improving efforts to combat climate change. The commission is also responsible for creating, developing, and implementing training, research, and application programs for nuclear technology development.
The commission complements the 2020 Nuclear Law and the National Authority for Nuclear Safety and Security (ANSSN).
However, there is currently no information on when the first of these innovative reactors will be deployed in Togo. It also remains unclear how the resulting nuclear waste will be managed and how security concerns will be addressed in light of the growing terrorism threat from the Sahel region.
Togo has been a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since 2012.
