At the end of May, the South-North volunteers will travel back to their home countries. Colette Boateng, a Togolese volunteer at the Bremen Mission offices, has written her final newsletter contribution — a reflection on her time in Germany. She was unable to arrive until later due to visa problems, and so was not here for a full year.

My time in Germany is gradually drawing to a close. When I think that I have already been here for seven months, I become aware of the distance I have travelled. The beginning was not easy: a new environment, being in a foreign country, a different language, a different social life, different customs, different food, a different culture and a climate I had to get used to. Everything felt at once confusing and fascinating.

I have discovered wonderful places, visited several cities and encountered different cultures at seminars I attended. This cultural diversity has broadened my view of the world. The encounter with another culture was not only a challenge but also a transformation. Gradually I learnt to see things differently. I have grown and, little by little, found my place.

What impressed me most is that, although society is often perceived as individualistic, solidarity is always there when you need it. That touched me deeply. I was also impressed by the commitment to environmental protection, the striving for a better future, the focus on sustainability, the efforts to combat the spread of plastic and the promotion of healthy eating. I also noticed the discipline and respect for social rules. Cultural differences played an important role during my stay: I learnt and I adapted.

Despite the distance from my home country, my home, my family and my friends, I did not feel alone, as I could count on my mentor as well as on the new friends I made here. It was an enriching experience, full of beautiful memories and shared, precious moments.
