Bremen Mission and the Bremen Information Centre for Human Rights and Development invite you to a talk followed by a discussion on 3 March 2026 at the Übersee-Museum Bremen.

Too small, too big, no longer fashionable, the wrong colour, a broken zip, an overfull wardrobe … there are many reasons why we sort out clothes and drop them into one of the more than 100,000 clothing donation containers in Germany or hand them in at collection points. Often this is done with the vague idea that the clothes will be passed on free of charge to people in need in African countries. But what really happens to our old clothes?
A significant proportion is indeed sorted and – compressed into bales weighing around 50 kilograms – exported, for example to Ghana, the most important importer of second-hand clothing in West Africa. What happens there to used textiles from Europe has been researched on site by the speaker Ann-Kristin Reinkenhoff from the University of Freiburg. She will present her findings. Afterwards, Golda Esime Korda and Akou Colette Boateng, two volunteers of Bremen Mission from Ghana and Togo, will share their perspectives on the situation. The event will conclude with an opportunity for exchange and discussion with the speakers.
