The controversial anti-LGBTQ+ law has now been passed by parliament in Ghana. The new law provides for much harsher penalties for gays, lesbians and queer people than the previous law. In future, however, even supporters will also be threatened with several years in prison.

The law still has to be signed by President Akufo-Addo, but this is considered a formality.

Since the bill was introduced in parliament, people who are affected and human rights organisations have protested against it. Foreign ambassadors and various companies have also spoken out very clearly against the law, which is mainly supported by various religious, including Christian, organisations and churches.

Amnesty International has criticised the law as "a significant threat to the fundamental rights and freedoms of LGBTQ* people". The head of the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development, Prof. Audrey Gadzekpo, called the law "dangerous and abhorrent" and sees it as a threat to human rights protected by the Ghanaian constitution.
